Softball Doubles Up on Valley Forge, 7-0 and 6-4

Langhorne, PA - Kelly Hendrickson and Jessica Good each earn wins on the mound for the Highlanders as Cairn sweeps the Patriots of Valley Forge Christian, 7-0 and 6-4.

In the opening game, sophomore pitcher Kelly Hendrickson pitched a daisy of a game, going all seven innings allowing only two hits and striking out eight batters on her way to her third win of the season and her second-career shutout.

Fellow sophomore Brigid Shehan paced the Cairn offense with a 3 for 3 performance at the plate, scoring two runs and batting in three. Hendrickson finished 3 for 4 with two runs and an RBI. Jessica Good had a solid game as well, going 2 for 4 with two runs and an RBI as well.

Rachel Clark, Erin Meade, and Ashley Mitchell each logged one hit.

Despite Hendrickson's solid pitching, Cairn only led 2-0 heading into the top of the fifth inninig when the Highlanders exploded for four runs and opening up a 6-0 advantage, eventually taking their tally to seven runs in the 7-0 win.

Game two came a little tougher for the Highlanders. Things started off great when Cairn notched three runs in the top of the first, but Valley Forge would not be shutout for a second straight game. The Patriots tallied three runs of their own, tying it at 3-3.

It remained 3-3 until the fourth inning. Ashley Mitchell started the inning of with a base hit single and advanced to second on a passed ball the very next pitch. Cairn had runners on the corner after Jess Good's single sent Mitchell to third. Good stole second preceeding Shehan's 2 RBI ground out, pushing the Highlanders ahead 5-3.

Both teams scored a run apiece in the fifth inning, with Cairn holding on to the two-run lead and claiming a 6-4 victory and the season sweep of the Patriots.

Four different Highlanders recorded two hits; Good, Hendrickson, Kristen Hubler, and Rachel Clark.

Jess Good allowed only one earned run in five innings of work, striking out two batters for career win number two.

Cairn improves to 5-20 on the season.

On Thursday, the Highlanders return to conference play with a trip to La Plume, PA to face Keystone College in a doubleheader.
