Langhorne, PA - The women's softball team earned their first win of the season on Monday, shutting out the Gators of Notre Dame College of Maryland in the first game of a doubleheader.
Kelly Hendrickson and the Highlanders picked up their first win of the season with a 7-0 triumph over their Colonial States Athletic Conference rivals. Last season, the Highlanders and Gators also split the season series, both taking a game apiece.
Hendrickson pitched a daisy of a game, striking out six batters, allowing only five hits, and earning her first career-shutout.
On offense, the Highlanders got hits from eight different batters, a season high for the team. Hendrickson stood out offensively as well with a double in the bottom of the sixth, earning one of her game-high two RBIs.
Ashley Mitchell notched her season-first RBI as well. Both Mitchell and
Hannah Blackmer went 1 for 2, each earning a run and an RBI.
Erin Meade and
Rachel Clark both recorded 1 for 3 outings.
Cairned tallied solo runs in the first, second, fourth, and fifth inning, before putting the game out of reach with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for the 7-0 win.
The Highlanders got things off to a similar start in game two, with a
Jessica Good run in the opening inning to give Cairn an early 1-0 lead. But in the top of the third, the Gators scored their first runs of the day, tallying two runs to take a 2-1 lead.
Things would be knotted at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth when
Jessica Piccolo scored from third on a passed ball. She had earlier stoled second and advanced to third on a previous passed ball.
However, after taking a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth, Notre Dame found itself with a 7-2 lead after the sixth inning after scoring four runs.
The Highlanders would get one back in the bottom of the seventh inning, threating with some late-game heroics. With two outs, Hendrickson rocked a single to left field. Sophomore slugger
Brigid Shehan then popped a double down the right field line, scoring Hendrickson all the way from first, reducing the score to 7-3.
Kristen Hubler got a good connection on a line-drive to left field only to watch the ball snagged by Notre Dame's Aubrey Janson to end the Highlander rally.
Hendrickson went 2 for 3 for the second time on the day, scoring once, while Shehan finished 1 for 3, knocking in two runs. Hannah Blackmer ended 1 for 2
