Swarthmore, PA - Cairn University's softball ladies fell to Centennial Conference powerhouse Swarthmore College in doubleheader action on Thursday.
In the opening contest, the Garnet shot out of the blocks scoring eleven runs in the bottom of the first on their way to a 19-3 win.
Cairn scored all of their runs in the top of the fifth inning.
Both
Kristen Hubler and
Jessica Good went 2 for 3 at the plate. Good recorded a couple of career first with her first two career RBI's and a first collegiate double. Hubler notched one RBI and
Kelly Hendrickson tallied her first double of the season.
The Garnet blasted 16 hits in game one.
The nightcap was a bit more competitive in the scoreline. Jess Good kick-started the offense for the Highlanders with a lead-off single to centerfield. Good advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Hendrickson. After
Brigid Shehan grounded out for the second out, allowing Good to make her way to third, second-year player Kristen Hubler gave the Highlanders their first lead of the day by smashing a double to rightfield, her first of the season, scoring Good. Cairn would hold on to the 1-0 for a brief time.
Swarthmore responded with three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-1 lead. In the second, the Garnet extended their lead with five more runs. Before things were over, Swarthmore tacked on two more runs for a 10-1 victory.
The losses knock Cairn to 0-13 on the season while Swarthmore improves to 11-5.
On Monday, the Highlanders return to conference action with a doubleheader with Notre Dame (MD). The Highlanders and Gators split the season series last year, with Cairn winning 11-1 and Notre Dame claiming a 15-14 win in a slugfest. Notre Dame comes to Langhorne boasting a 3-7 record but remain winless in the CSAC at 0-5.
