Softball Facing Tough Competition in South Carolina

N. Myrtle Beach, SC - Cairn University's softball team concluded their trip to the National Collegiate Sports Invitational with a pair of losses on Wednesday.

Against NCAA Div II opponent Concord University, the Highlanders were overpowered 19-0. Concord blasted 12 runs in the top of the 2nd inning to all but put the game out of question early on.

In the nightcap, Cairn faced Principia College for the second time in two days. On Tuesday, Principia got their revenge for a 10-9 Cairn win back in 2012, with a 15-0 score. Principia jumped out front early and fast, scoring 4 runs in the 1st inning and adding 6 more in the 2nd inning.

On Wednesday, the Highlanders made things more interesting against their familiar opponent. Trailing 6-3 into the top of the 5th inning, Cairn strung together a couple of hits to tie the game at 6-6.

Principia responded, however, with an 8 run bottom of the 5th to secure a 14-6 victory.

Cairn leaves South Carolina with an 0-5 record but will have little time to dwell on things as they head right into conference play. On Friday, the Highlanders will play host to Marywood University in a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 3pm.
