Men's Soccer Falls to #4 Rutgers-Camden, 2-0

Box Score Langhorne, PA - In the midst of a five-game skid and injury crisis, the last thing you want to see is a nationally ranked team as your next opponent, but that's what the Highlanders faced on Tuesday as Cairn faced #4 Rutgers-Camden.

Box Score

Despite the different fortunes of the two teams at play, it took 43 minutes before someone broke the deadlock. After defending wave after wave of attack, it was rather a simple ball that unlocked the Cairn defense. At the 42:02 mark, Rutgers-Camden's Guiseppe DeLuca chipped Cairn's goalkeeper from 20-yards out following a straight-forward pass from midfield over the top.

Although the visitors held a big advantage in possession and territory, the Highlanders were heading into the break only down 1-0.

There was no relief in the second stanza and only took the Scarlet Raptors 3:33 into the half to double their lead. Stevan Austino converted a cross from Mitch Grotti to put Rutgers up 2-0.

It was a similar story for the remainder of the game, with the Highlanders defending brilliantly, sometimes bending but not breaking under the pressure of the fourth-ranked Raptors.

Dave Shaffer made several big saves throughout the game in making a season-high 13 saves to keep Cairn competitive.

Cairn falls to 7-9 on the season while Rutgers-Camden remain undefeated at 15-0-2.

The Highlanders will travel to Clarks Summit, Pa this Thursday to square off with Baptist Bible in the NCCAA East Region semifinal.
