Immaculata, PA - The Cairn University's men's soccer team won their fifth game in a row with a shutout win over Colonial States Athletic Conference rival Immaculata University, 1-0.
Box Score
It was a strong defense that once again propelled the Highlanders to yet another victory on Wednesday afternoon.
Dave Shaffer recorded five saves for his fourth shutout of the season, the team's fifth. The backline of
Andrew Gordon,
Ben Cardillo,
Jeremy McAlack, and
Nathan Woodcock held solid all game, stifling many of Immaculata's attacks, as they have over the course of the current string of victories.
You cannot win a game, though, unless you're able to put the ball in the back of the net. And that's what the Highlanders did in the 30th minute of play. Sophomore Ben Cardillo found space inside the Mighty Macs penalty area and rifled a shot heading to the far-post. Immaculata's Joseph Lubonski made a quick reaction save to steer the ball away from the net, but his effort only managed to direct the ball directly into the path of sophomore
Caleb Moore who made no mistake, putting Cairn up 1-0. It was Moore's team-leading 5th goal of the season.
Although holding the lead for 60 minutes, the Highlanders still proved an offensive threat with 11 second half shots, and holding the advantage in shots over the course of the game 18-12.
Craig Kikendall paced the Highlanders with five shots.
The win pushes Cairn to 7-3, 2-0 CSAC on the season, extending their win streak to five.
Cairn has registered a shutout in five of their last seven games.
The Highlanders will look to carry their momentum into this weekend's showdown with Centenary College coming to Langhorne, PA. Since joining the CSAC in 2008, Cairn and Centenary have alternated winners with the home team winning every time.
