Women's Soccer Ends 7 Year Drought Against BBC

Meacham Tallies Two Goals Against BBC
Langhorne, PA - Cairn University's women's soccer team withstood a late Baptist Bible comeback to end a 7 year winless drought against the Defenders of BBC.

Box Score

The date was October 21, 2005 and the Cairn Highlanders had just defeated Baptist Bible College 2-1. No one would have guessed it would take another 7 years to return to the victory column against their longtime rivals.

Things got off to a positive start when Cairn's Kathleen Meacham scored her first goal of the season in the 23rd minute, giving the Highlanders an early 1-0 lead, in front of growing crowd. As play continued to flow back-and-forth, the Defenders wasted a couple of quality chances as their finishing let them down and the Highlander's Amara Mills made BBC pay. At the 39:23 mark, Nicole Mantell played a quality ball into the Defender box and Mills was on hand to drill her one-time shot into the upper corner of the net, putting Cairn 2-0 up.

BBC outshot the Highlanders 13-10 in the first half but Cairn led where it mattered.

Ten minutes into the second half, the Highlanders extended their lead to 3-0 when Kathleen Meacham completed her brace, scoring her 2nd unassisted goal of the game. Cairn would need all three goals though as BBC would put forth a nail-biting comeback that fell just short. Chi Boggs scored in the 65th minute to put the visitors on the board and Karin Mowry tallied in the 80th minute to pull Baptist Bible to within one goal and set up an edge of your seat final ten minutes. Cairn netminder Morgan Swan came up huge throughout the game with some crucial saves to secure the win for Cairn, earning her 2nd career win. Swan made 12 saves on the afternoon.

Laurisa Wager led Cairn with 5 shots, 3 on goal, and controlled the Highlanders attack from midfield, spreading passes left to right, in an unsung manner. The newly paired backline of Jessica Holt, Sara Poole, and freshman Chelsea Miller look to be creating a solid partnership for Cairn to rely on as well.

The Defenders held a 25-19 advantage in shots and 9-2 in corners.

The Highlanders face Marywood University on Tuesday in Langhorne, PA at 4pm for their next conference match up.
