Langhorne, PA - Gary Bruce scored two goals on Saturday, leading the Highlanders to a 2-0 win over conference rival Keystone College.
Box Score
Despite the 2-0 win, things didn't always look so certain for the Highlanders. In the 19th minute, Keystone was awarded an early penalty kick and a chance to take the lead. The Giant's Ryan Ehrhardt stepped up but had his spot kick saved by Highlanders goalie
Dave Shaffer. Shaffer was forced to quickly rise to his feet to swat away a follow attempt from another Keystone player to keep things even at 0-0. A goal certainly would've changed the direction of the game.
Coming out of halftime 0-0, Cairn quickly gained the upperhand by pinning back the Giants with wave after wave of attacks. After being outshot 9-3 in the first half, the Highlanders held the advantage 11-8 in the second and led 6-1 in second half corners. But matters most are goals, and in the 54th minute, junior forward
Gary Bruce found the back of the net for his first tally of the season.
The Highlanders continued to have the better of things and finally added an insurance goal in the 78th minute when senior winger
Seth Mangum played in Bruce who beat the offsides trap and slotted home off of the breakaway.
The Highlanders would stave off any Keystone attack and hold on for the 2-0 victory. The win moves Cairn to 3-4-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference. The loss drops Keystone to 3-7; 1-2 in CSAC play.
Freshman
Ahron Park and
Andrew Milcarek also recorded assists during the game. David Shaffer made 11 saves to preserve his second shutout of the season and earn his 3rd win.
Nationally ranked Rutgers-Camden wait on the horizon for the Highlanders. On Monday, Cairn will travel to Camden, NJ for a 7pm kick-off to take on the NSCAA #6 ranked Scarlet Raptors.
