Langhorne, PA - In a doubleheader, the Rosemont Ravens got the better of the Crimson Eagles.
With cloudy skies and an early sprinkle, the rain held off to get the softball matches in. And just as in the day before against Cedar Crest, PBU played the first game close. PBU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning when
Brigid Shehan (Media, PA / Penncrest) drove in
Kiersten Waltz (Glen Burnie, MD / Annapolis Area Christian) after Waltz hit a lead-off double.
Rosemont would even the score at 1-1 in the top of the 3rd. The defensive stalemate was about change though.
There would be a flurry of runs in the last 3 innings. The Ravens notched 3 runs in the top of the 5th breaking the deadlock. One inning later, the Ravens would add 2 more runs extending their lead to 6-1, but the Crimson Eagles would respond in the bottom of the 6th with a pair of scores. PBU started off with three consecutive singles, led once against by Waltz, who went 3-for-4 and scored 2 runs in the opening game.
Kelly Hendrickson (Southampton, PA / William Tennet) followed suit with her own single and putting Waltz in scoring position. Shehan then singled, bringing home Waltz. Although
Emily Cronin (Franklinville, NY / New Life Christian) grounded to the pitcher, she drove in Hendrickson and gave PBU hope for a comeback.
It wouldn't materialize and Rosemont would hold out for the 7-3 win.
Shehan went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI's. Kiersten, apart from her 3-for-4 offensive output, also had a strong outing on the mound striking out an impressive 12 batters, walking 2, and only giving up 2 earned runs.
The later game in the doubleheader saw the Ravens string together 4 innings with at least one run to start the game. By the 5th inning, the scoreboard read 8-0 and that's how the game would end.
Hendrickson was on the mound for the Crimson Eagles but only gave up 4 earned runs. Despite the pair of losses, Waltz and Hendrickson seem to be getting stronger as the season progresses. PBU just needs to eliminate some of the fielding errors and things will start clicking.
Another positive and first for the season, PBU held their opponents in single-digits for both games over the course of a doubleheader.
The softball team will now have three days of rest before they will take on Eastern University on Wednesday, March 28 at 3pm in another doubleheader, a welcome break for the arms of Waltz and Hendrickson.
