Immaculata, Pa – Cairn’s men’s basketball team were denied their first conference win of the season on Saturday against Immaculata University after the Highlanders fell 76-59.
Cairn’s forward
Seth Heinicke has avoided the sophomore slump, coming into the game averaging 22.5 points a game. He did all he could this game with 28 points, but it wasn’t enough. It took Heinicke and the Highlanders almost 9 minutes to score their first basket of the game. After falling behind 20-3, Cairn finally started to put things together and mounted a slow comeback the rest of the half, eventually pulling to within 7 points, 35-28. That was as close as they would get though, as Immaculata closed out the half leading 40-28.
The second half was more of an even match up, with both teams refusing to allow any huge runs from their opponents, but it meant the status quo remained the same. Immaculata claimed a 36-31 second half score, running out 76-59 winners.
The win means Immaculata starts its conference schedule off with three wins in a row. The Mighty Macs are now 4-4 overall.
Cairn on the other hand has yet to win a CSAC game yet, falling to 0-4. The Highlanders are 1-6 this season.
Charles Hopkins continues to improve his game, running the point for the Highlanders as he finished with a season-high 13 points and 5 assists. The junior guard is currently ranks 3rd in the conference for assists, averaging 3.4 a game, which is sure to go up after this game. He also ranks 5th in terms of Assist/Turnover ratio, with a positive 1.5. The Mighty Macs placed three players in double digits, led by freshman Tyreek Peeples who tallied 20 points.
