Cairn Falls At Final Hurdle

Langhorne, PA - Cairn University's men's soccer team went into Saturday's regular season closer needing a win to secure a playoff spot in the Colonial States Athletic Conference.

Box Score

The first half was an even affair with both teams recording 4 shots. The only difference being a 42nd minute goal from Marywood's Daniel Hull. Late in the first half, Hull got on the end of Tim Kane's cross in a crowded penalty area and his header slipped just underneath the body of Cairn's goalkeeper Joseph Gerberich.

Needing to find the equaliser, the Highlanders came out ready to play. Unfortunately, the next goal came at the wrong end of the field. Only 10 minutes after the break, Brandon Ritter's low shot found the back of the net giving Marywood a 2-0 lead. Gerberich appeared to get his hands to the shot, but couldn't stop it from slipping underneath him.

Not one's to lay down, the Highlanders responded in the 74th minute. Forward's Gary Bruce and Seth Mangum played some nice one-touch passing to play in Cody Mosely into the Marywood box. Mosely was then tripped up, earning a penalty for Cairn. The ensuing penalty was saved by Marywood's Shane Quinn, but Mosely made up for his missed opportunity by slamming home the follow up, pulling Cairn within one goal at 2-1.

Any major shift in momentum was swiftly cut out exactly 30 seconds later when the Pacers were awarded a penalty of their own at the other end. Daniel Hull added his second goal of the game, slotting his penalty to the lower left-hand corner.

With 15 minutes left and needing 2 goals to keep their playoff hopes alive, Cairn began throwing bodies forward in search of goals. With so many players pushing forward, Marywood took advantage of the spaces at the back and creating a number of shots on goal. Thankfully none found the back of the net but neither did any of Cairn's efforts.

Marywood held a slight advantage in shots, 13-11 but the teams were tied with 9 shots on goal each.

Cairn finishes their 2012 season with a 6-11-3 record and a 3-6 conference record. Marywood claimed 3rd place in the upcoming CSAC playoffs with a 6-1-2 record in conference.
