Hackettstown, NJ - Cairn University's men's soccer team dropped a late season Colonial States Athletic Conference match against Centenary College on Wednesday afternoon.
Box Score
It didn't take long for goals to be thrown up on the scoreboard. In the 9th minute, the Highlanders still looked like they were going through warm-ups when Centenary's Edward Medow was quickest to react and knock home a rebound inside the box from an Alex Khouri shot that was initially saved. I wouldn't say Cairn had waken up yet when they equalised just three minutes later, but a goal is a goal no matter how you play the game. Sophomore midfielder
Glodi Konga slid in a pass behind the Cyclones backline, breaking the offsides trap, and releasing junior forward
Gary Bruce in on goal for a breakaway goal at the 11:47 mark.
With the score tied at 1-1, it still took the Highlanders some time to get going but eventually they started gaining control of the match in the final 15 minutes or so of the half, but were unable to turn their momentum into a goal.
Halftime seemed to take all the wind out of the sails for Cairn as they came out in the final half second best. Centenary quickly grabbed the momentum back and it paid off it the 59th minute when Quinn Khouri beat his marker end line and slotted a cross into the path of Edward Medow for his one-time effort. It was his second goal of the game and proved to be the game-winner as Centenary went on to win 2-1.
With just four seconds left on the clock, Cairn very nearly forced overtime when
Jeremy McAlack slashed his shot inches wide of the post.
Since Cairn University joined the CSAC in 2008, the home team has won every match between these two schools in men's soccer.
Centenary weren't shy about shooting from anywhere in the attacking half, as they let fly 24 shots, compared to Cairn's 8 shots. But Centenary only held a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal. Cairn is notorious for being very selective in their shot selection, which leaves them at the bottom of the conference for shots taken but near the top in shooting percentage.
Dave Shaffer and
Joseph Gerberich each made 1 save for Cairn. Jesse Goleman made 2 saves for Centenary.
The loss leaves Cairn in a tight spot heading into a final weekend showdown with Marywood University. A win and Cairn earns the 5th seed in the CSAC playoffs. A tie or a loss leaves it up to other results around the league. In last season's meeting, Marywood squeeked out a 1-0 win in overtime.
