Dover, DE - Sophomore Justin Nolan recorded his first career goal against Wesley College on Monday night, but the Wolverines stole the win in overtime.
Box Score
In a very entertaining game, the Highlanders took the lead in the 27th minute when senior midfielder
Joran Hays played a pass out wide to
Justin Nolan. Nolan then unleashed a rocket from about 35 yards out that went over the keepers head and tucked underneath the crossbar, giving Cairn the 1-0 lead.
The lead held up going into the break, with Wesley holding a slight adbvantage in shots, 12-9, for the first half.
With Wesley's seniors playing their last and final game of their career, they came out after halftime ready to take the game to the Highlanders. Just under three minutes into the second half, senior striker Josh Chelleh evened things up. Chelleh raced onto a loose ball inside the Highlanders box and despite
Dave Shaffer getting a hand to his shot, the ball trickled across the line.
The Wolverines continued to pressure the Cairn backline but the Highlanders repelled the wave of attacks. As the half wore on, Cairn started to climb it's way back into things. The game continued in a back-and-forth manner and both teams had their chances, but things would be decided in overtime.
In the 98th minute, a Wesley throughball was cut out by a Cairn defender. But Wesley's Josh Chelleh, who was a menace all night, picked the ball off the Cairn center back and slotted home the game-winner.
Wesley outshot Cairn 25-16 despite Cairn forcing Wesley's pair of goalkeepers Brian Zuber and Ryan Sanders into more saves. Cairn placed 9 shots on goal compared to Wesley's 7.
Seven different Highlanders recorded two shots or more.
This was the last non-conference game of the season for the Highlanders, who have two crucial conference matchups this week. The first coming up this Wednesday when Cairn travels to Centenary College. Kick-off is set for 4pm.
