Knights Nip Highlanders 1-0

Langhorne, PA - Cairn University's men's soccer team fell to two-time defending CSAC champions Neumann University on Saturday, 1-0.

Box Score

Neumann's Francis Kailondo scored the game's only goal in the 53rd minute, taking a pass from midfielder Michael Attalian, and shooting past Dave Shaffer in the Cairn goal.

The two teams went into halftime with the score 0-0 and Neumann holding a slight advantage in shots, 7-5. But it was Neumann who came out and controlled play for the next 45 minutes. Cairn tried pushing for a goal late on but failed to produce from any of their attacks in the second half.

Despite the 1-0 loss, it was improvement from a Cairn program that had conceeded 10 goals combined in their last two meetings with Neumann (5-1 in 2010 and 5-0 in 2011).

"I thought our defense played well, limiting their opportunities and being big on the backline. All season, they've faced some very tough competition and some off the best attackers in Division III and held their own." said Cairn Head Coach Scott Fogarty after the game. The Highlanders backline has been anchored by senior Jon Minnema and freshman Andrew Gordon. Jeremy McAlack, Samuel Hunter, and rookie Ben Cardillo have traded off protecting the flanks on defense in some fine performances. Behind them, Dave Shaffer has continued to progress as a goalkeeper, getting better every year.

Cairn falls to 5-7-2 overall and 3-3 in conference play.

Next up, the Highlanders face off with non-conference rival Lancaster Bible College. Kick-off is set for 3pm on Tuesday.
