Cairn Shutout by Rosemont

Rosemont, PA - Cairn University's men's soccer team came undone against CSAC rival Rosemont College on Wednesday afternoon.

Box Score

The Ravens of Rosemont made the most of their opportunities in deservedly defeating the Highlanders 4-0, if in a somewhat flattering scoreline.

For the first twenty minutes of the game, it was all Cairn. The Highlanders grabbed the initiative right off of the kick-off, putting the host on the backfoot, by controlling possession and carving out scoring chances. In just the 6th minute, junior midfielder Cody Mosely unleashed a close-range rocket but it was straight at Rosemont's goalkeeper. Less than a minute later, Mosely was at it again, this time hitting wide left. Cairn continued bossing the early going when freshman midfielder Tim Andrews had the Raven's Nick Hulayew beat with his shot in the 18th minute, only for his shot to hit the outside of the  far-post and out of harm's way from Rosemont's perspective.

After surviving the early onslaught, Rosemont grew into the game and eventually things evened out. With less than two minutes left in the half, Rosemont seized an opportunity to jump ahead. After a loose ball had squirted free to the end line, Rosemont's Patrick McElroy was the quickest to react and blasted his shot from a very tight angle across the face of goal and into the opposite top corner, giving Rosemont the momentum and 1-0 lead going into the break.

The Raven's came out of the half the same way they went into it, with the momentum. And it paid off right away. Patrick McElroy was at it again less than three minutes into the second half. Taking a feed from Ahmed Faik, McElroy rocketed his shot past Cairn's Dave Shaffer for his 2nd goal of the game.

The game was all but decided in the 70th minute when a bit of confusion ensued after a ball had appeared to go out of play over the end line, with half the players giving up on the play and the other half sticking by the age old adage, "play until the whistle." There was no whistle, play continued and Rosemont's Luke McIlviane punished the Highlanders with his teams 3rd goal of the game.

Ahmed Faik made it 4-0 in the 76th minute with a nifty near-post finish.

Cairn was outshot 16-9. Jon Minnema paced the Highlander with 3 shots. Shaffer registered 7 saves on the day.

The Highlanders fall to 5-6-2 on the season and slip to 3-2 in conference play. Their task doesn't get any easier with Neumann coming to town this Saturday for another CSAC showdown. Kick-off is at 2pm.
