FAYETTVILE, NC - The women's volleyball team wrapped up their trip south Saturday afternoon by maintaining .500 ball throughout the expedition. After scraping past Agnes Scott 3-1, the Crimson Eagles were swept by Methodist University in a 3-0 shutout.
During their opening contest early Saturday, PBU pushed past the Scotties by scores of 25-21, 23-25, 25-23, 25-21. Despite being outmatched in nearly every statistical category including total kills, digs, aces, and blocks, the Crimson Eagles capitalized on 19 Agnes Scott service errors as the Scotties managed a paltry .791 serve percentage.
"I thought we played well - the girls played hard. We're still getting the kinks out, though," noted head coach Julie Brubaker at the conclusion of the match. "We served well, which is our strength. So we are trying to play to our strengths as much as possible."
However, things wouldn't sail so smoothly during round number two.
Facing host Methodist University during their second match of the day, the Monarchs were able to regulate play from the get-go. The home squad blasted 50 kills while hitting at a .337 clip as a unit to help propel Methodist to a 25-21, 25-18, 25-21 victory early Saturday afternoon. Four players collected eight or more kills for the Monarchs.
Despite the loss, Brubaker remained optimistic about her team's effort during the defeat.
"I thought this was the best we played all weekend," she noted. "But it was also the best team we've seen so far. I saw a lot of potential that we can take with us into the rest of the season, which is encouraging."
PBU sophomore Rachel Calderon posted 20 kills and 40 digs during the two matches and fourth-year outside hitter Carly Plank added similar numbers, going for 20 and 28, respectively.
The Crimson Eagles will take a five day break from game action, returning to the court next Thursday to go up against NCAA II powerhouse Philadelphia University. The local rivals will square off in the Mason Activity Center at 7:00 pm.
