PSU-Harrisburg Spoils Home Opener In OT Thriller

Box Score

LANGHORNE, PA -
It was a tale of two halves for the PBU women's soccer team on Saturday in their home opener against PSU-Harrisburg.  Unfortunately, this game included some extra time, and it was there the Lions would get the upperhand in a 3-2 win.

Trailing 2-0 at halftime, the Crimson Eagles made a furious rally in the 2nd half.  Katherine Zell made it 2-1 on a breakaway in the 61st minute, and they would score the equalizer in the 89th minute on a goal by Kathleen Meacham to force overtime.

"We outplayed them in the 2nd half, and the equalizer by Kathleen Meacham was well deserved," said coach Dewey Landon.  "We came very close to earning that second goal numerous times throughout the 2nd half, including one off the post from Katherine Zell."

After a scoreless opening overtime period, the Lions would finally break through in 102nd minute.  Jessie Manion, who also scored PSU-Harrisburg's first goal, beat goalkeeper Sarah Towne on the left post for the winning goal.

Towne started in goal for the injured Kristen Lyszczasz, who suffered a concussion in Wednesday's win over Valley Forge Christian.  Towne performed well in her absence, making 10 saves in the game and holding PSU-Harrisburg scoreless for 70 minutes before the game winning goal.

For Landon, it was a tough pill to swallow, but one that the team can take some positives from.

"I was disappointed for the ladies, but not disappointed in them because they gave a fantastic effort," said Landon.

The Crimson Eagles will look to rebound on Wednesday, September 15 at 4:00 at home against Penn State-Abington.  It will be their final non-league tune-up before opening CSAC play at Centenary on September 18.
