SCRANTON, PA - The women's volleyball dropped a 3-1 decision to Marywood University during the opening round of the CSAC postseason late Tuesday evening, closing out PBU's season in the process.
Looking to avenge a 3-0 loss to the Pacers earlier in the year, the fifth seeded Crimson Eagles were unable to complete the upset, falling 25-21, 25-20, 21-25, 25-23.
Despite 32 attack errors from the host group, the Pacers combated their lack of efficiency at the net with eight aces on the night while adding seven total team blocks to the mix. Minus the third set, Marywood also limited PBU to a mediocre 45.2 sideout percentage.
The Crimson Eagles ultimately ended the evening with the overall edge in terms of attack percentage (.068 to 0.31) but the group was shackled with eight return errors, signaling just the third time in the team's last 12 matches they've been hit with eight or more blunders.
The Pacers, who are 8-2 over their last 10 games, picked their spots wisely, including a furious comeback at the end of the fourth frame. The Crimson Eagles - looking to even things at 2-apiece - held a 23-20 edge down the final stretch and were in position to force a fifth set.
However, seizing a jolt of momentum, the host group rattled off the final five points of the game fueled by three costly PBU errors. The near two-hour match was finished in a matter of moments following the Pacers' quick, surprise burst.
In her final collegiate game, senior Carly Plank posted 13 kills and 11 digs to mark her ninth double-double of the season. Rachel Calderson added a career high 27 digs in the losing effort to go with 8 spikes. Lindsay Dager added 7 kills and Rebekah Morrison dished out 31 assists.
The Crimson Eagles close out the year with a 16-16 overall record.
