GWYNEDD-VALLEY, PA - After a somewhat slow start, the Crimson Eagles overcame Gwynedd-Mercy College on the road Tuesday evening, bettering the Griffins by scores of 25-20, 17-25, 25-22, 25-21.
After splitting the first two matches of the evening, PBU turned on the jets during games three an four. Following the sluggish opening that saw the visitors manage a 38 percent side-out percentage, the Crimson Eagles upped that number to 53 percent during the final two frames.
"We had a rough start but we found the glue that helped us bond as a a team and play well," noted head coach Julie Brubaker following the win. "Ashleigh Colomina did very well stepping in as a freshmen setter tonight."
Despite a .092 hitting clip for the evening and a 41-34 disadvantage in total kills, PBU utilized nine service aces for the evening while watching Gwynedd-Mercy dish up 14 service errors to help push the visitors past the 6-21 Griffins.
The Crimson Eagles received 10 kills and nine digs from senior Carly Plank while Colomina chipped in with a career high 16 assists to go with six stops defensively. Rachel Calderon added 16 digs and seven kills on a .400 hitting percentage.
The win moves the volleyball squad to 14-14 on the year with a 6-4 mark in conference play. Hosting Centenary College at home on Saturday, a win over the Cyclones would secure PBU's third straight CSAC postseason berth. Match time is 1:00 pm.
