LANGHORNE, PA - The Crimson Eagles survived a formidable test against the Giants of Keystone College Saturday afternoon, ultimately prevailing against their league foe in four games.
The volleyball team belted out 49 kills throughout the four game affair - their second highest count of the season - en route to the group's third conference triumph thus far.
Having easily dispatched Keystone in their only two previous meetings in program history, Saturday's version of the Giants proved to be a much different opponent than in earlier years.
"Keystone has really improved from a year ago," noted head coach Julie Brubaker following the near two hour slugfest. "I was thoroughly impressed with how resilient and scrappy they proved to be."
Nevertheless, with homecoming weekend in full swing, PBU delighted the Crimson Eagle faithful by piecing together an effort that included 11 service aces from the host group, a number that signals the sixth time already this season that they've reached double-digits in the category.
The host squad also used a respectable .178 hitting clip to boost the group to their eighth overall victory of the season. PBU ultimately triumphed by scores of 25-19, 23-25, 25-23, 25-19.
"We were just trying to find ways to get going on offense because Keystone did a great job of getting to a lot of our attacks on the defensive end," Brubaker noted. "We probably didn't play our best match of the year today but thankfully it was a good enough effort to pull out a win against a solid team."
After going 8-4 to start the season, the Giants have hit of rough patch as of late, falling in six consecutive outings following Saturday's slip-up.
For PBU, the win means the Crimson Eagles sit 3-1 in the conference, a mark good enough to place them in a three-way deadlock in the third position.
Senior Carly Plank posted her third consecutive double-double and sixth on the year by finishing play with 13 kills, 11 digs, and six aces. Erika Catalano provided a team high 19 digs and Rachel Calderon chipped in with 10 spikes and 16 stops on the defensive end.
The group will continue conference action during their next match when the squad hosts Neumann College on Wednesday to wrap up a six-game homestand. Match time is slated for 7:00 pm in the Mason Activity Center.
