SALEM, VA – Posting your worst loss in nearly a full year isn’t exactly how most coaches envision kicking off a season. But rebounding the following day with a truly inspired victory performance on the road? That’s what coaches eat up.
The men’s soccer team pulled out a 2-1 victory over Bridgewater College in grind-it-out fashion Saturday evening as senior Jeremy Dunham dropped home two scores on the night to help lead PBU to their first win of the season.
“We played much better tonight in really every aspect of the game. We were much more controlled, we moved better, we had better spacing,” sideline chief Clay Roberts noted at the conclusion of the match. “Our defense was improved and I thought we played much better as a unit. We were fortunate to beat a very good team tonight.”
Sophomore Justin Hays fed Dunham a through-ball on the ride side which Dunham collected and knocked home from the right corner to put PBU up 1-0. The senior forward would strike again soon after, sneaking behind the back line and collecting a feed from classmate Phil Haas to put home what ended up being the game winning goal.
“This was a good confidence builder for us,” Roberts continued. “Hopefully we can take some things away from this game that we can use down the road.”
Following the group’s return home from Virginia, the soccer team will head to Widener University next Wednesday to take on the Pride at 4:00 pm.
