Roanoke Proves too Powerful on Opening Day

Box Score

LANGHORNE, PA – Hoping to kick off the season with a staple upset on the road, the Crimson Eagles instead found out just how good Roanoke College really is.

The Maroons cruised to a 6-0 triumph behind a potent offensive attack that blistered the Crimson Eagle net with 29 shots for the game.

“It was somewhat of an eye opening experience for us,” second-year head coach Clay Roberts commented following the contest. “We have a young team and have things we need to work out at this point in our season, but nonetheless Roanoke is just an extremely talented team.”

The preseason favorite to come out atop the ODAC, Roanoke struck often and early, drilling their first score of the contest just 10:34 into the opening period and following up with two additional scores by the 22 minute mark to break open a 3-0 lead. An insurance tally 52 seconds before the break put the contest at 4-0, and the Maroons would balloon their lead to 6-0 before the final horn sounded.

PBU struggled to get things going on the offensive end, managing just three shots and a single corner for the evening. Six different Maroon players scored during the game for a team that’s made it to the big dance five different times over the last decade.

“We’re still trying to get to know each other on the playing field. On a young team, it takes time to become comfortable with the guys that you’re playing with, but we’ll get there,” said Roberts.

The soccer team will have another chance to pull out their first win tomorrow evening when the group takes on Bridgewater College in Virginia at 5:00 pm.
