LANGHORNE, PA - In a meeting that could very well feature a pair future playoff rivals, Cabrini College got the best of the Crimson Eagles during Saturday's most recent affair between the two foes.
A year ago, the third seeded Cavaliers knocked off the second seeded Crimson Eagles in the opening round of the playoffs and, if this weekend was any indication, it looks as if both groups may be primed for another postseason match-up down the road.
But on Saturday the Cavaliers manufactured a well-deserved 3-0 triumph over their counterpart during a match that proved much closer than the final digits might suggest. Cabrini pulled off a 25-23, 17-25, 30-28 win behind a .211 hitting clip, marking just the fifth time this season the Crimson Eagles have allowed a plus .200 margin.
In the opening set, Cabrini would quickly build up a small lead, gathering a 15-11 edge halfway through. But an 8-2 spurt in favor of the Crimson Eagles would give PBU a temporary 19-17 edge. The Cavaliers would even things at 19-all before coming through in the clutch by stealing six of the final 10 points.
The visitors would fall behind early in the second game and would fail to ever gain their footing. Trailing by a count of 7-2 early, PBU would go down by as much as 18-8 before ultimately succumbing by a final margin of 25-17.
In dire need of a triumph in the third rally to keep their chances of a W alive, the Crimson Eagles instead fell down 10-7 to get things started. Realizing the importance of the moment, PBU reversed the roles over the middle portion of the game sparked by a 13-7 run behind eight kills from the visitors.
But a Cabrini surge in the waning moments would ultimately even things at 22-apiece as both squads would battle back-and-forth for the final, vital points. Down 28-27, Cabrini would prove extremely efficient during the final three points, plugging home three straight kills to finish off PBU.
Junior Carly Plank notched her fourth double-double of the season in the loss, pumping out 14 kills, 14 digs, and a match high five aces. Freshman Rachel Calderon added 14 digs and seven kills and fourth-year outside hitter Tanya Jendrek added 12 digs and two aces.
PBU falls to 10-7 with a 2-1 mark in CSAC action while Cabrini moves to 11-3 on the year (3-0 CSAC).
The volleyball team will return to the court on Tuesday when the group takes on Moravian College on the road at 7:00 pm.
