PBU Shrugs Off Wells During Home Opener

Box Score

LANGHORNE, PA - It was quite a productive afternoon for the Crimson Eagles during the opening three minutes of each half on Sunday.

Although the rest of the game didn't prove quite so easy, the soccer team notched goals during the beginning moments of play in each stanza to boost PBU to a 2-0 triumph over Wells College in non-conference action.

In the soccer team's home opener of the 2008 campaign, the Crimson Eagles outshot the opposition for the first time this season and recorded their greatest number of looks at goal in the group's first shutout of the year.

Just three minutes into the opening period PBU struck pay dirt when Justin Hays capitalized during the host squad's first corner opportunity of the game. The sophomore forward somehow collected the ball among a mass of bodies and calmly slipped it past Wells' keeper Mike Birklin to give the Crimson Eagles an early edge.

PBU would fail to take advantage of several key chances later in the period and would be forced to wait until the opening two minutes of the back end of play before they would net another score when senior Phil Haas would post his first goal of the year off a cross from Hays.

Junior keeper Andy Ecker would prove invaluable in the back stuffing several Wells attempts late in the game to help preserve the Crimson Eagles' second win of the season.

When the final horn finally sounded the host squad  would hold advantages in both total shots (16-11) and corners (5-0) for the day.

PBU improves to 2-1-1 with the win while the Express fall to 0-5.

The soccer team will
hit the field again on Tuesday when the group hosts Marymount University at 4:00 pm.
