Abington, PA - It's been 11 full days and six games since the Crimson Eagles have enjoyed the advantage home turf typically brings to a team.
But thankfully, road worries haven't been in existence during that span as the softball squad has ripped off five wins during their six away contests, including Wednesday's pair of 11-3, 11-5 triumphs over Penn State Abington. Good thing too, because PBU will continue their road trek for another week and a half before returning to host Penn State Berks on April 18.
On Wednesday PBU came out firing on all cylinders in the opening contest, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first and notching two additional scores in the second to jump out to a 7-3 edge. Three scores in the fifth and an insurance crossing in the seventh helped the Crimson Eagles produce just their fifth double-digit scoring output of the season.
PBU shelved 10 hits for the game and managed 11 walks while Penn State Abington fumbled six times on the defensive end. Betsy Ranck hurled a complete game allowing no walks and just three earned runs through the seven innings.
Although things weren't quite as pretty in game two, the Crimson Eagles somehow tallied the six run victory despite getting outhit in the contest, 9-7. The Nittany Lions struggled to capitalize when it counted, stranding 11 runners on base for the game.
Lauren Roth went three for five with a run scored on the afternoon and Megan Garven finished two for four at the plate with three runs scored and two walks. Stevi Gainer added a two for five showing in the batter's box while adding a single tally across home plate.
The Crimson Eagles will return to the field tomorrow afternoon to square off with Baptist Bible College in Clarks Summit at 3:00 pm.
