LANGHORNE, PA - It was a gritty performance that would ultimately come up just short Saturday.
Playing all afternoon against visiting Marywood University without two-time All-Conference senior forward Tom Arthur and down 18 midway through the second half, it probably would have been somewhat expected for the Crimson Eagle men's basketball team to fold and call it a day.
Instead, PBU kicked things into an extra gear and decided to give the Pacers everything they could handle. The host squad played with a determined auro for the final 10 minutes of action, pressuring Marywood into 15 second half turnovers leading to a 26-13 edge in points off coughups for the Crimson Eagles for the game.
PBU would pull to within three with 39 ticks left in the second stanza and would gain control of the basketball after another Pacer blunder on the offensive end. But a missed jumper would force the Crimson Eagles to foul the remainder of the way as Marywood calmly connected on six of eight charity tosses down the stretch to ice the game.
Making his first collegiate start, freshman Bart McCardle led the way for the Crimson Ealges with a career high 22 points on eight of 14 shooting from the field. Senior forward Austin McCardle added a season high 15 points and five boards in 27 minutes of work, and Willie Miller flirted with a triple-double, filling the statsheet with 14 points, eight rebounds, seven steals and four assits. Senior point guard Dan O'Brien chipped in 11 points in the loss.
The Crimson Eagles fall to 1-19 in the loss while Marywood moves to 14-7 overall.
PBU will continue their quest for a CSAC win on Tuesday when the group heads north to Keystone College to take on the Giants at 8:00 pm.
