GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA - After containing Gwynedd-Mercy for 82 minutes of play, the men's soccer team finally broke down Wednesday afternoon.
The host squad's single score with eight minutes remaining proved to be enough to push the Griffins past the Crimson Eagles during a 1-0 slugfest in Gwynedd Valley.
Unscathed after the opening 45 minutes of play despite getting somewhat dominated, PBU managed to come together during the second stanza, controlling the possession and momentum for much of the second half.
Ironically, it would be then that Gwynedd-Mercy would capitalize. The Griffins rattled off 15 shots in the opening half - the fourth highest number PBU has allowed during a 45 minute span this year - but failed to find the back of the cage thanks, in part, to seven first half stops from Crimson Eagle keeper Andy Ecker.
Deadlocked at 0-0 entering the back end of play, the visitors would finally find their groove and limited the Griffins to just three total shots for the period. However, despite the stark contrast in periods, Gwynedd-Mercy's Joe Moses would slip a rebound into the net during the 82nd minute in what proved to be the game's only goal.
The Griffins would end the game with an 18-6 edge in shots and finished with a 4-3 advantage in corners.
PBU drops to 5-6-2 on the year with a 1-2-1 record in the CSAC while Gwynedd-Mercy improves to 5-7 with a 2-1 mark in the conference.
The Crimson Eagles will look to bounce back on Tuesday when the group hosts Neumann University in Langhorne at 4:00 pm.
