LANGHORNE, PA – Call it a tear, call it a hot streak, or call them on fire. Call it what you will, but either way, the women’s volley team is officially on a roll.
After going just 4-4 to start the season, the Crimson Eagles picked up their sixth win in seven games including their forth straight Saturday afternoon, dispelling of visiting conference foe Notre Dame in three sets.
The victory improves the Crimson Eagles’ record to 2-0 in CSAC play this year, giving the squad their 11th straight conference victory dating back to last season’s play within NEAC competition. It also puts PBU in sole possession of first place in the CSAC - though it may be temporary - as they are the lone group to record two conference wins so far thus year. Neumann, Baptist Bible, and Gwynedd-Mercy all currently sit at 1-0.
The opening set saw PBU struggle early. The Gators jumped out to a 15-4 lead, including seven straight points from server Katie Murphy, who helped force the Crimson Eagles into five errors during the span.
Thankfully, the Notre Dame onslaught was a false prophecy of things to come.
Down 15-4 in the opening rally, PBU - like they have done so many times already this season - pulled together and strung off the next 11 points to even things at 15-all. Rattled, the Gators quickly lost focus and all-but fell apart as PBU outscored the visitors 21-5 over the back end of the first set.
Riding the sudden wave of momentum, the Crimson Eagles capitalized by cruising to a 25-11 win in set two as the team allowed just a solo Gator kill in the entire rally. Up 2-0, PBU closed things out with a 25-17 victory in the final game.
With the two top setters in the CSAC squaring off against one another in Saturday’s contest, Crimson Eagle junior Betsy Ranck got the better end of her counterpart - Gator sophomore Christina Kudrna - as Ranck dished out 29 helpers on the day, compared to Kudrna’s eight. Ranck also snatched eight digs defensively, while senior outside hitter Becky Williams just missed completing her third straight double-double after finishing with 17 kills and eight digs. Junior Kay Lynn Zeiset finished the night with a team high nine digs.
The loss drops the University of Notre Dame under .500 for the first time this season, while PBU improves to 10-5.
The Crimson Eagles will return to the hardwood this Tuesday when the squad takes on visiting Moravian College in nonconference action. Match time is 7:00 pm.
