Keuka Park, NY - For Keuka, it was the ending that every young gun with a ball and glove dreams of. Unfortunately for PBU, it was just the opposite.
Desperately clinging to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the seventh with two outs and no runners on against the top-seeded Storm, PBU was a lone out away from making their first ever appearance in the NEAC championship. But with the sweet taste of victory within an arms length, the Crimson Eagles began to unravel.
A Keuka triple put a runner on third with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Needing a hit to keep the game alive, Keuka drilled a shot to the outfield that was probably playable -- but dropped -- allowing the game changing and game tying run to score. Fortunately, PBU did manage to secure the third and final out with the next batter to send the game into extra innings.
The Crimson Eagles scored the go-ahead run in the eighth to take a 2-1 edge into the top of the inning. But with things once again looking like PBU had things locked up, the Storm struck in deja vu fashion.
Keuka pumped out consecutive hits to tie things at 2-apeice and notched the game winning score just minutes later. The victory marks the sixteenth win in the conference for Keuka this season as their only loss in NEAC play came to the Crimson Eagles back on April 18.
Despite the defeat, the Crimson Eagles still have a chance to get back to the championship as the tournament is double elimination. PBU will play Penn State Berks in a second go-around tomorrow morning at 10:00 am for the chance to play in the title bout. The Nittany Lions were a 5-3 victor over Baptist Bible earlier in the afternoon.
The winner will move on to the NEAC championship to begin at 12:00 pm Saturday afternoon but will need to beat Keuka twice in order to secure the title and the automatic bid to the NCAA III National Tournament.
