LANGHORNE, PA - Although not a postseason contest, the Crimson Eagles knew Wednesday's match against Cabrini College would probably have significant playoff ramifications in the near future.
In fact, Wednesday's contest was more-or-less a battle for the second spot in the conference tournament, as both teams entered the night with similar 7-1 CSAC records.
It might have took all of five full games, but the Crimson Eagles all-but secured that coveted second spot in a grueling win over the Cavaliers by scores of 24-26, 25-21, 25-23, 23-25, 15-10.
"This was probably one of our best efforts to date this season,” said head coach Julie Brubaker following the all-important match. “Everyone played well tonight. We had several players step up and really make a positive impact – more so than in the past, which was really encouraging.”
Incredibly, five different Crimson Eagle players managed double digit digs and four players recorded double digit kills as PBU pummeled the visitors with 61 total kills on the night, compared to Cabrini's 43. The host squad also managed an important 9-4 edge in service aces for the night.
“I thought we had a great team defensive effort tonight. We were able to ride some momentum down the stretch and thankfully we were able to pull out the win.”
Junior setter Betsy Ranck finished with 48 assists and 17 digs and senior Becky Williams added team highs of 16 kills and 24 digs. Junior Kay Lynn Zeiset chipped in with 24 stoppers defensively, while sophomore Lindsay Dager and freshman Rebekah Morrison contributed 14 and 13 kills, respectively.
The Crimson Eagles improve 8-1 in the conference with the win, while the Cavaliers slip to 7-2 in CSAC action.
PBU will shift their focus to the NCCAA East Region Tournament tomorrow afternoon when the top-seeded Crimson Eagles will host the event by kicking off play in the semi-finals against fourth-seeded Washington Bible College at 3:30 pm. A PBU win would put the squad in the Championship match set to begin later that night in the Mason Activity Center at 7:30 pm.
