LANGHORNE, PA - With just four conference matches left, the women's soccer team knew it was a long shot. But riding a two game winning streak to enter Saturday's contest, the group had put themselves in a position to potentially sneak into the sixth and final playoff spot pending back-to-back wins.
Any hope the Crimson Eagles may have had was abruptly shut down in the final 45 minutes of play Saturday afternoon against Gwynedd-Mercy College, as the Griffins blew up for six scores in the second stanza alone to run away with a 7-0 victory and erase any PBU thoughts of a CSAC tournament berth.
Six different Griffins scored on the day in Gwynedd-Mercy's seventh conference win of the season. The visitors out drilled the host squad 24-1 and held a 10-0 advantage in corners taken.
Incredibly, PBU allowed just a single score in the opening period as junior keeper Kristen Lyszczasz helped keep the host within striking range by registering seven first half saves. Unfortunately it wasn't the same story in the second stanza as Gwynedd Mercy notched three goals in the first 11 minutes of the back end of play to break open a four goal lead.
PBU falls to 6-11 (3-6 CSAC) with the loss while Gwynedd-Mercy improves to 9-9, (7-2 CSAC).
With the Crimson Eagles' CSAC postseason hopes dashed, the team will turn their attention to the upcoming NCAA East Regional Tournament. The second-seeded PBU squad will take on third-seeded Lancaster Bible College on Tuesday in the opening round at 1:30 pm.
The Crimson Eagles pulled off a 1-0 triumph over the Chargers just three wees ago.
