Soccer Squad Manages 2-1 Win in Langhorne

Box Score

LANGHORNE, PA - Just four days and two games ago, the women's soccer team was all but eliminated from the CSAC playoff picture.

What a difference a couple of days can make.

Needing to come out victorious in their final four games of the season just to have a shot at being included in the "final six", PBU is now halfway there. With Tuesday's monster 2-1 win over visiting Neumann College, the Crimson Eagles have set themselves up for a potential postseason bid heading into the final two games of the year.

But sitting directly in PBU's path is a third place Gwynedd-Mercy group that just got finished hammering Cedar Crest College on Tuesday by an 8-1 count. Should the Crimson Eagles be fortunate enough to escape with a win against the Griffins, it would potentially set up a do-or-die situation against Immaculata next Thursday in the season finale.

But on Tuesday the host squad kept their slim CSAC tournament hopes alive by scoring the first two goals of the contest en route to their fourth win in their past six tries.

Senior defender Brittany Sparling tallied her team leading seventh goal of the season 38 minutes into the opening stanza to give PBU a one goal edge at the break.

After a first half that saw the Crimson Eagles pound Neumann's back line time after time, the Knights managed to create several of their own scoring opportunities on the offensive end during the back end of play. But despite Neumann's efforts, PBU junior forward Christine Schmidt managed to counter by connecting for her second score of the season to give the hosts a two goal cushion in the 74th minute.

Just eight minutes later, Neumann registered what ended up being a token goal to break the scoreless shutout, but nonetheless PBU withstood nine second-half Neumann shots to help preserve their second straight win. Junior keeper Kristen Lyszczasz managed five saves on the day.

The triumph moves the team to 6-10 overall on the year with a 3-5 record in the conference. Neumann falls to 3-13-1 (1-6 CSAC).

The Crimson Eagles will host Gwynedd-Mercy College on Saturday in a must win situation for PBU. Game time is 1:00 pm.
