WBB: Highlanders Outpace Patriots

LANGHORNE, PA – Cairn bullies Valley Forge in 77-41 victory

Valley Forge (0-12 / 0-7 UNITED EAST) struggled to contain the Highlander's offensive output. Cairn (2-12 / 1-5 UNITED EAST) got off to a strong start with 5th year guard Kailee Sobrino (Vail, AZ / Empire) knocking down an early 3-pointer and on possessions later junior forward Emily Brittin (Winslow, NJ / Pilgrim Academy) collected an offensive rebound and went back up for two points giving the Highlanders an early 3 point lead. This lay-up also started a hot streak for Brittin, she went on to score the next 8 points in the game and stretched the Highlander lead to 11. Cairn topped off their 1st quarter scoring with another 3 from Sobrino and a mid-range jumper from junior forward Dezaray Bright (Keystone Heghts, FL | Keystone Heights). The Highlanders finished the first period with a 18-10 advantage. The second quarter was a closer affair for Cairn, seeing more back and forth scoring than the first. Brittin recorded another 6 points in this frame to help the Highlanders maintain their lead before Sobrino knocked down a 3-pointer with only 5 seconds left on the clock to send the game into the half with a score of 32-22.

The third quarter was more of the same from Brittin scoring the first 6 Highlander's points of the second half, including another layup following an offensive rebound. Freshman guard Lily Welsh then tok a turn serving as the hot hand, knocking down two 3-pointers to push the Highlanders out to a 17 point lead over Valley Forge. Cairn closed the quarter with another 4 points from Brittin and a short jumper by Sobrino. The final frame of the contest started with another 2 points from Brittin before she handed the reigns over to Sophomore forward Lexi Cramer (Greenwood, DE / Greenwood Mennonite) who knocked down 4 3-pointers in the quarter. With several Brittin baskets, a Sobrino 3-pointer, and two baskets from freshman forward Meg Gleason mixed in with the Cramer sharpshooting Cairn pushed the lead to 36 by the final buzzer.

Brittin had a historical performance recording a career-high 32 points and breaking a Cairn University women's basketball program record with 26 rebounds in a single game.

Cairn will continue United East Conference play by going on the road to visit Penn State Abington on Wednesday January 21st at 7 PM.
