Langhorne, PA - Cairn drops game to the Phoenix of Wilson College
The Highlanders got off to a quick start in the first quarter with junior forwardÂ
Audrey Elisondo (Bethesda, MD / James I. O'Neill) banking in a mid-range jumper on the first possession of the game. The score remained close for the remained of the first quarter, with Cairn's (1-12 / 0-5 UNITED EAST)Â biggest lead of the first frame being a 4 point advantage after a 3-pointer by 5th year guardÂ
Kailee Sobrino (Vail, AZ / Empire). Wilson (8-8 / 2-3 UNITED EAST) brought the deficit to 3 before the end of the quarter, entering the second period with the score at 14-11. The Highlanders were slow to get going in the second quarter allowing 6 straight points before a pair of made 3-pointers from Sobrino. The Phoenix responded to these shots by going on a 10-2 run. Elisondro and junior forward
Emily Brittin (Winslow, NJ / Pilgrim Academy) bth scored late to keep the game close, entering the half with the Highlanders trailing 31-27.Â
Sobrino kept scoring in the third quarter making another shot from beyond the arc and knocking down a free-throw early in the frame, but Cairn was unable to keep up with Wilson's high paced scoring and the lead grew to 13 points.  The Highlanders responded with two baskets both assisted by Sobrino, the first was a layup by Brittin, the second was a 3-pointer by freshman guard
Lily Welsh (Mt. Laurel, NJ / King's Christian). Wilson was able to push the lead back out and a late free throw by Welsh left the Highlanders trailing 54-43 entering the fourth and final frame. Sobrino hit two early jumpers in the fourth but the Phoenix maintained their lead. A Sobrino 3-pointer and a pair of free throws by Elisondro cut the lead to eight. Sobrino then gathered a steal off the in-bounds pass and made a quick lay-up to pull the Highlanders wwithen 6 points of the Phoenix. This was the closest the game would be however, with Wilson continuing a steady stream of scoring to protect their lead. With under a minute remaining in the game Sobrino was fouled on long range shot and was awarded 3 free throws.  Sinking all 3 free throws brought Kailee to a season high 30 points, Sobrino also matched her career high with 8 rebounds.
Cairn will return to United East Conference play on Saturday when they host the Patriots of Valley Forge in the Mason Activity Center at 3 PM.Â
