PURCHASE, NY— The Highlanders traveled to Purchase, NY on Saturday to face Lehman College in their season opener, ending in a 79-52 defeat.
Lehman (1-0 / CUNYAC) got the scoring started right away and got a 5-0 lead off a three-pointer and a jump shot in the paint. Junior forward
Laryssa Robinson (Mount Laurel, NJ / Life Center) got Cairn's (0-1) scoring started with a layup. Sophomore forward
Lexi Cramer (Greenwood, DE / Greenwood Mennonite) followed up with a layup as the score became 10-4. Lehman went on a 9-point run to make it 19-4 before Cramer got a three-pointer to close the gap. The quarter ended after a 6-5 span in Lehman's favor. Lehman led after the first 25-12.
The second quarter started with Lehman extending their lead by 6 before junior forward
Dezaray Bright (Keystone Heights, FL / Keystone Heights) stopped the run with a 2-point jumper. Lehman took storm and extended their lead to 42-25. Fifth year guard
Kailee Sobrino (Vail, AZ / Empire) closed out the quarter with going 2-2 from the free throw line. Lehman had the lead 49-27 to end the half.
After the break Lehman put on the defensive stops and prevented Cairn from scoring for six minutes as they pushed their lead to 35 points, 64-29. Bright ended the drought with a 2-point jumper with an assist from Sobrino. The next 1.5 minutes remained without a single score as both teams' defenses were on point. Lehman changed that with a layup in the paint, but Sobrino matched the score with a jumper in the paint. Cairn finished the quarter with back-to-back jumpers from junior forward
Emily Brittin (Winslow, NJ / Pilgrim Academy) and Sobrino. The third quarter ended with Lehman having a 68-37 lead.
Sobrino got the scoring started for Cairn in the fourth quarter with a 3-point jumper off a fast break followed with a 2-point jumper. Bright and Robinson closed the gap with a combined 6 points. The game remained scoreless for the last 3 minutes until bright closed the game with going 3-3 from the free throw line. Lehman won 70-52.
Sobrino led the Highlanders in points with 17 and assists with 3 while Bright starts the season with a double-double, getting 15 points, 15 rebounds and going a perfect 5-5 from the free throw line.
The Highlander's remain on the road to face off against Purchase College to close out the Purchase College Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday November 8th at 1pm.
