SB: Highlanders Split with Clarks Summit on Senior Day

LANGHORNE, PA – Cairn Softball hosted Clarks Summit University for their season finale on Saturday, splitting the series, dropping game one 3-1 with a late Defender comeback and closing the season on a high note with a 5-4 win in game two.

GAME ONE
Cairn (9-25 / 5-11 UNITED EAST SKYE DIVISION) scored first in the third starting with freshman outfielder Ella Quince (Morrisville, PA / Morrisville) singling down the right field line. Sophomore catcher Myiah Petroro (Long Island, NY / Liberty University Online Academy) and senior centerfielder Adriana Shannon (Marlton, NJ / Cherokee) walked to load the bases. Sophomore infielder Sydney Wright (Souderton, PA / Souderton) put the ball in play to right field for a sacrifice fly, scoring Quince.

Clarks Summit (19-15-1 / 9-7 UNITED EAST SKYE DIVISION) tied the game in the top of the seventh on two hits and a walk as they held the Highlanders to a scoreless bottom half to force extra innings. In the eighth, the Defenders led off with a double, scoring the extra inning runner on second before adding an insurance run on an errant throw. The Highlanders would get the tying run to second base before the third out was recorded as they dropped game one 3-1.

Between games, Shannon and senior outfielder Katie Fauske (Staten Island, NY / Port Richmond) were honored as part of the Senior Day festivities.

GAME TWO
The Defenders scored first in the second game on a run and an error in the first, adding a second run in the third frame on an RBI double to go up 2-0. Cairn answered right back in the bottom half as freshman shortstop Emily Brittin (Winslow, NJ / Pilgrim Academy) opened up with a leadoff triple. Quince walked, putting runners at the corners. Shannon doubled scoring Brittin easily and moving Quince to third. Petroro beat out an infield single, scoring Quince and stealing second on the next pitch to put two runners into scoring position for Wright to score Shannon and junior infielder Abbi Heacock (Media, PA / Delaware County Christian) to score Petroro on a single up the middle, taking the lead back 4-2.

Cairn added a later needed insurance run in the fifth as Wright tripled with one out and was scored by Heacock on a sacrifice fly. Clarks Summit threatened in the sixth, scoring two runs on four hits in the inning to make it 5-4 but went down in order in the seventh for the Highlanders to take a 5-4 win.

Freshman pitcher Evelyn Johnson (Yardley, PA / Calvary Christian) recorded her 100th career strikeout in game one, throwing 15 innings on the day with a total of seven strikeouts, also adding two hits at the plate in game two. Brittin also had two hits in game two with a triple.
