SB: Softball Plays Two with Gallaudet

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Cairn University softball team took on the Bison of Gallaudet University in the nation's capital on Friday afternoon for a Skye/Volt Division crossover doubleheader. The Highlanders dropped both games, 6-4 and 3-1.

GAME ONE
Gallaudet (4-4) got on the board first, putting a three spot in the bottom of the 1st on a 2-run triple, scoring the third on an error. Cairn (1-13) answered with two runs in the second as freshman shortstop Emily Brittin (Winslow, NJ / Pilgrim Academy) led off with a double to center followed by freshman pitcher Evelyn Johnson (Yardley, PA / Calvary Christian) who scored her on a fly out. Sophomore infielder Abby McIntyre (Galloway, NJ / Pilgrim Academy) worked a walk, advancing on a passed ball and single from junior infielder Julia Bruestle (Abington, PA / Abington HS) and then being driven in to score by senior center fielder Adriana Shannon (Marlton, NJ / Cherokee) putting the ball in play and reaching on an error to cut the lead to 3-2.

Johnson & McIntyre walked to lead off the fourth and got moved over by a sacrifice bunt from Bruestle. Sophomore outfielder Jolene Zefferi (Bristol, PA / Bristol) scored Johnson on a ball to second base, McIntyre coming around on a throwing error to take a 4-3 lead over the Bison. Gallaudet tied things up in the bottom half on an infield single, taking a 6-4 lead on an RBI triple and another infield single. That would be all for the offense in the game as Gallaudet took a 6-4 victory in game one.

Johnson would pitch three scoreless innings in relief, striking out five and allowing only a pair of walks and zero hits.

GAME TWO
Gallaudet took an early lead in the back end of the doubleheader, scoring a pair in the bottom of the first inning. From then, it would be a pitcher's duel as both squads would play five scoreless innings. Cairn got the offense in gear in the top of the seventh inning, opening the frame with a single by senior outfielder Katie Fauske (Staten Island, NY / Port Richmond High School). Shannon singled to third base, moving Fauske into scoring position and bringing the tying run to the plate. Sophomore catcher Myiah Petroro (Long Island, NY / Liberty University Online Academy) reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Fauske for the Highlanders' only run of the game as they fell 3-1.

Johnson took the loss in game two despite throwing five scoreless innings, striking out eight, and allowing only four hits.

The Highlanders will head to Hazelton, PA to take on the Nittany Lions of Penn State – Hazelton on Monday for a 3/5 p.m. doubleheader as their last tune-up before beginning Skye Division conference play on Wednesday at Rosemont.
