LANGHORNE, PA - The Cairn Highlanders Women's Basketball team dropped their regular season finale with Bryn Athyn, 61-54 on Wednesday night.
Play got underway with an 8-3 run from Bryn Athyn (16-7 / 13-5 United East Skye Division), putting the Highlanders on the defensive. Junior forward
Taylor Hinson (Carney's Point, NJ / Collingswood) got to work with a jumper and layup to get Cairn (15-10 / 10-8 United East Skye Division) back in the race. Freshman guard
Makayla Raines (Jonesboro, GA / St. Mary's Academy) found classmate
Ella Quince (Morrisville, PA / Morrisiville) for a fast break layup to take the Highlanders' first lead of the night. The Lions splashed a three to take a slight edge, 13-11, as the first quarter came to a close.
Bryn Athyn would extend as far as twelve points in the second period as Hinson and Raines worked together to fight back for control. They were able to cut the lead to nine, closing out the half on a Raines triple, down 32-23.
The third quarter was the best one for the Highlanders, outscoring Bryn Athyn 23-18 to cutting the lead to one possession. Raines and freshman forward
Amalia Vamvakitis (Waterford, MI / Mount Dora Christian Academy) each hit from long range while Hinson made all five attempts for the team from the free throw line and as a group shot 50% from the field in the frame. Hinson had 11 of the Highlanders 11 points.
The Lions tried to keep pushing forward in the fourth, opening with a three. A bucket from Quince and two layups by freshman forward
Dezaray Bright (Keystone Heights, FL / Keystone Heights) cut the lead to one. Bry Athyn climbed back, sensing a comeback, and finished on an 8-2 run in the last four minutes of play.
The Highlanders were plagued by a rough shooting night from deep (3-20 / 15%) and 19% shooting from the field in the fourth quarter alone (4-21 / 0-10 3PT). Hinson led the scoring on the night, putting up 25 points and ten rebounds with a season-high four blocked shots. Raines added 16 points and three steals. Bright grabbed 8 rebounds and scored six points while Quince had a great rebounding night with 14 boards, 4 points, and 3 assists.
Cairn Women's Basketball has secured the #5 seed on the Skye Division side of the United East Women's Basketball Championship and will head to #4 WIlson College on Saturday for the Divisional First Round matchup. Tip off
