WBB: Highlanders Drop Road Conference Matchup With St. Elizabeth

MORRISTOWN, NJ – The Cairn University Women's Basketball team traveled to Saint Elizabeth University on Tuesday night, taking on the Eagles and falling in their Skye Division matchup, 57-49.
 
Cairn (9-7 / 5-5 United East Skye Division) took the lead off of the tip, opening on a 12-4 run. Junior forward Taylor Hinson (Carney's Point, NJ / Collingswood HS) had eight of the Highlanders 17 points in the frame, outscoring the Eagles 17-8.
 
Saint Elizabeth (14-3 / 9-1 United East Skye Division) took over in the second quarter, scoring 7 unanswered point to cut the lead to a one possession game. Freshman guard Makayla Raines (Jonesboro, GA / St. Mary's Academy) knocked down a triple to get Cairn on the scoreboard in the quarter. The Eagles would continue pressing the offense, scoring 12 more unanswered after Raines' bucket and going to halftime with a 27-22 lead.
 
Out of the break, the third quarter was a battle began with a pair of layups from Hinson. Raines would pull up in the paint for two and assist freshman guard T'miya Bryant (Raleigh, NC / South Garner High School) for a layup after a steal. Cairn held the edge in the tightly contested third stanza, narrowly outscoring the Eagles 18-17.
 
In the fourth, Cairn would cut the deficit to a single point before the Eagles pushed the lead as far as 10 points, putting the lead out of reach for the Highlanders. Despite a late bucket from freshman forward Dezaray Bright (Keystone Heights, FL / Keystone Heights High School), Cairn came as close as eight points in the end, falling 57-49.
 
Hinson scored 17, snatching 12 rebounds with a pair of blocks and steals. Raines provided 15 points on a triple with 3 assists and 3 steals. Bright and freshman guard Ella Quince (Morrisville, PA / Morrisville) were both in double figures for rebounds with 12 and 10, respectively.
 
Cairn Women's Basketball closes their road trip as they host the Falcons of Cedar Crest College on Saturday for a 1 p.m. tip off inside the Mason Activity Center.
