Women's Basketball: Highlanders Upset Phoenix at Home

LANGHORNE, PA - The Cairn Women's Basketball team faced off against Wilson College for the first time in conference play this year, defeating the Phoenix in upset fashion 76-70, Wednesday night. 

Cairn (8-6 / 4-4 United East Skye Division) had a great first quarter shooting 46.7% from the field while shooting 40% from the three as Junior forward Taylor Hinson (Carney's Point, NJ / Collingswood HS) and freshman guard Makayla Raines (Jonesboro, GA / St. Mary's Academy) each struck from deep, leading Cairn to a 18-15 lead to end the quarter. 

Hinson was on fire in the second quarter scoring 12 points. The Highlanders held onto the lead, finishing the quarter on an 6-2 run, and closing the half ahead 36-24. 

The third quarter started with Wilson College (7-9 / 6-3 United East Skye Division) coming out hot against the Highlanders, outscoring Cairn 31-16. The run from started off with their defense as they pressed the Highlanders for most of the period. This led Wilson to take a 55-52 lead entering the final quarter.

In the fourth quarter it was a back-and-forth battle. Freshman guard Ella Quince (Morrisville, PA / Morrisville HS) was a key contributor for the Highlanders, scoring 5 key points in the fourth frame. Junior forward Favor Okpali (Prince George's County, MD / Hagerstown Community College) dominated the offensive boards, helping to hold off Wilson with 3 offensive rebounds late. Raines hit the dagger from three to put the game out of reach. Cairn held on to take the 76-70. 

Hinson finished with a line of 29 points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 blocks and 3 steals while shooting 83.3% from the free throw  line, taking aim at 1,000 career points, now 17 points away. Raines had 17 points while Quince added 12 points and four steals. 


Next up for the Highlanders is the Patriots of Valley Forge, on the road Saturday evening in Phoenixville, PA. The action tips off at 2 p.m.
