LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Cairn University softball team concluded the 2023 season with a home doubleheader against Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) adversary Rosemont College on Monday afternoon, dropping game one by a score of 9-1 before falling 3-2 in the nightcap, officially eliminating the Highlanders from playoff contention. In between games, Cairn honored their three seniors,
Theresa Beck (Lansdale, PA / Dock Mennonite Academy),
Jenna Kenyon (Clarksville, MD / River Hill) and
Kacey Wees (Irwin, PA / Hempfield) for their outstanding contributions to the program over their careers.
In game one, Rosemont (19-15, 13-3 CSAC) threw a quick punch via a four-run first inning, before Cairn (12-20, 6-10 CSAC) got on the board with an RBI-single courtesy of freshman
Sydney Wright (Souderton, PA / Souderton) in the bottom of the second. The score remained 4-1 until the top of the fifth, when Rosemont blew the game open with five runs in the inning and won via eight-run mercy rule.
Beck and Wright paced the Cairn offense with a pair of hits in game one. Wees concluded her last career game in the circle, giving up four earned runs and striking out a pair over five innings.
In game two, Cairn responded well needing a win to get into the conference playoffs, plating the first run of the contest in the first frame off of an RBI-knock by Kenyon. The Highlanders increased the advantage to 2-0 in the bottom of the third, when Beck launched an RBI-triple to right field to score freshman
Myiah Petroro (Long Island, NY / Liberty Online). Rosemont got a run back in the fourth, and trailed 2-1 heading into the top of the sixth inning. The Ravens bats woke up in the sixth, pounding out three hits combined with a sacrifice bunt to score two runs and take a 3-2 lead into the seventh inning. Cairn got a runner on base via a two-out single by freshman
Abby McIntyre (Galloway, NJ / Pilgrim Academy) but stranded the tying-run at first base.
Beck and Petroro tied a team-high with two hits a-piece, including a double and a triple for Beck. Beck battled in her final collegiate game in the circle, going seven strong, scattering five hits, three runs (two earned) and striking out one.
The Highlanders conclude the 2023 season with an overall record of 12-20 and were 6-10 in conference play. The Highlanders finished in a tie for the fifth and final seed in the conference championship tournament, but Wilson College grabbed the final playoff spot due to head-to-head tiebreak with the other four teams tied for the fifth seed.
