LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Cairn University softball team split their Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) doubleheader at home against Notre Dame of Maryland University on Saturday afternoon, winning a 3-1 defensive battle in game one, before dropping an 11-1 decision in the nightcap.
In game one, Cairn (7-11, 2-2 CSAC) jumped in front with a 2-0 advantage after plating runs in each of the first two innings. Junior
Adriana Shannon (Marlton, NJ / Cherokee) capped off the early scoring with an RBI-double down the left field line in the second frame. Notre Dame (8-8, 3-1 CSAC) cut the deficit to 2-1 after scoring in the top of the fourth, before Shannon gave the Highlanders an insurance run in the bottom half with her second RBI-knock of the contest. Those runs were all senior pitcher
Kacey Wees (Irwin, PA / Hempfield) needed, as Notre Dame put just one runner in scoring position for the rest of the contest.
Cairn was led offensively by Shannon with two hits and two RBIs. Sophomore
Abbi Heacock (Media, PA / Delco Christian) added two hits on three at-bats. Wees was lights out in the circle for Cairn, earning her seventh win of the season via a complete game, four-hit performance, allowing no earned runs and striking out four.
The Gators got the bats working in game two, putting up a five-spot in the third inning, followed up by another three runs in the fourth inning, before Cairn notched its first run of the contest in the fifth.
Freshman
Sydney Wright (Souderton, PA / Souderton) paced the offense in game two with a two-for-two output, and scored Cairn's only run.
