MORRISVILLE, Pa. – The No. 1 seed Cairn University women's tennis team won their fourth-consecutive Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Championship with a 5-0 victory over No. 2 seed Clarks Summit University at Pennsbury Racquet Club on Saturday afternoon. Cairn's four-straight conference titles are the most consecutive CSAC Championships by any program in school history, officially surpassing men's cross country (three straight from 2014-2016).
Cairn (10-5) kicked off doubles play with an 8-0 shutout in the No. 1 slot courtesy of senior
Paige Kemper (Lancaster, PA / Garden Spot) and sophomore
Ersy Neal (Wayne, PA / Delaware County Christian School). The Highlanders got another shutout over Clarks Summit (5-10) in the No. 3 doubles slot from juniors
Abby Horning (St. Adamstown, PA / Cocalico) and
Gabriella Hurst (Stevens, PA / Cocalico), and finished off the doubles sweep when junior
Rachel Campbell-Robertson (Richmond, VA / Veritas School) and sophomore
Rebekah Hepp battled to an 8-7 (7-4) tiebreak triumph in the No. 2 slating.
In a race to five wins, Campbell-Robertson picked up the first of two needed singles wins by retirement in the No. 2 slot, before Kemper gave Cairn the decisive fifth victory with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout at No. 1 singles. Kemper concludes an astounding, undefeated career in conference play at both No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles, not losing a single CSAC match in singles or doubles play in four years.
As mentioned, the Highlanders won their fourth-straight CSAC Championship, the most consecutive CSAC Championships by any program in school history. Cairn will also make their fourth-straight appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Highlanders will find out where they are headed for the first round of the tournament when the NCAA announces the bracket on Monday, May 1 at 12 p.m.
