BRYN ATHYN, Pa. – The Cairn University women's basketball team lost, 68-57 on the road against Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) foe Bryn Athyn College on Saturday, splitting the season series with the Lions.
Bryn Athyn (7-7, 6-4 CSAC) got off to a 6-2 start the game, before Cairn (8-6, 6-4 CSAC) closed the frame on a 10-2 run, boosted by four points each from freshmen
Taylor Hinson (Carney's Point, NJ / Collingswood HS) and
Tamia Warner (Ewing, NJ / Ewing) to take a 12-8 lead after one. The second quarter was controlled by the Lions, as they scored 25 point in the stanza and led 33-27 at intermission.
In the third quarter, the Highlanders trailed by five (45-40) with 1:38 left in the frame, but two consecutive baskets by Hinson and senior
Dakota Hitchner (Ocean City, NJ / Atlantic Christian) trimmed the Lions lead to just one (45-44) at the end of the third. Unfortunately, The Lions came out firing on all cylinders in the fourth, scoring the first nine points of the quarter and getting their lead up to 15 (61-45) at its largest point with 4:47 to play. The Highlanders managed to cut the deficit to seven (61-54) following a 9-0 run of their own, but the Lions held on to claim the victory.
Cairn shot 38.6% (22-57) compared to 37.1% (26-70) for the Lions. The Highlanders held a slim advantage in the rebounding category (44-39) and dished out 15 assists. The difference in the contest came down to the turnover department, with Bryn Athyn forcing 23 Highlander turnovers compared to 14 of their own.
Cairn was led offensively by Hinson, who notched her fifth double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds (both team-highs). Hinson was 7-11 from the field and grabbed four offensive rebounds. Hinson was followed by Hitchner, who finished with 14 points, seven boards and a team-high five assists. Warner and senior
Markie Watson (Jupiter, FL / Calvary Academy) each finished in double figures with 10 points a-piece and six and seven rebounds, respectively.
Cairn will be back in action on Wednesday, January 26 when it returns home to take on defending conference champion Notre Dame of Maryland University inside the Mason Activity Center at 6 p.m.
