Women’s Volleyball: Late Rally Propels Mighty Macs Past Highlanders

LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Cairn University women's volleyball team lost at home vs. Immaculata University by a score of 3-2 (25-20, 25-19, 20-25, 16-25, 13-15) on Saturday afternoon.

The Highlanders (0-3) won the first two sets of the match for the second-straight day. Cairn took the lead at 16-15 midway through the set and didn't trail for the rest of the stanza. The Highlanders pushed forward again with an 11-4 run to start the second set. Immaculata (1-1) responded by taking the lead at 15-14. However, the Highlanders answered with five consecutive points and closed out the set to take a 2-0 lead. After the Mighty Macs snagged the third set (25-20), Immaculata rode that momentum to a commanding 18-2 lead in set four. Cairn made it interesting, cutting the Mighty Mac lead to eight (20-12), but the deficit proved too large and Immaculata sent the contest to a fifth and final set. In set five, both teams traded punches and were deadlocked at 13-13 before Immaculata strung together two-straight kills to claim the match.

Cairn junior Kali Burres (Wanaque, NJ / Hawthorne Christian), paced the Highlanders with a game-and career high 17 kills to go along with 15 digs and three assists. Also earning double digits kills was senior Allison Barnes (Macungie, PA / Salem Christian), who put down 10 kills and registered a team-high three service aces. Junior Paige Kemper (Lancaster, PA / Garden Spot HS) and freshman Peyton Queen (Orlando, FL / Lake Mary HS) each contributed six kills (career-high for Queen), while Queen tied a team-high with three service aces. Queen also scooped up a career-high 16 digs. Sophomore Olivia Zepp (Westminster, MD / Francis Scott Key) dished out a team-and career high 34 assists and also paced Cairn with a career-high 18 digs.

Cairn will be back on the court on Thursday, September ninth when it travels to Marywood University for a non-conference bout with the Pacers at 7 p.m.
