LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Cairn University women's volleyball team won both of its contests in their tri-match at home on Saturday, shutting out Manor College 3-0 (25-3, 25-1, 25-2) and handling business against Five Towns College in the nightcap by a score of 3-1 (23-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-19).
The sweep was highlighted by the Highlanders breaking the program record for service aces in a single contest with 43 in their first match of the day against Manor College, smashing the previous record of 30 achieved against Purchase College on September 23, 2006 (official statistics started being recorded in 2005). In that first match, Cairn (2-4) dominated the contest with their exquisite serving, as Manor (0-3) was unable to reel in most of the Highlanders' serves, leading to the record-breaking performance. Three Highlanders racked up eight aces on the day, which were all career-highs for sophomore
Olivia Zepp (Westminster, MD / Francis Scott Key) and freshmen
Peyton Queen (Miami, FL / Lake Mary HS) and
Avonlea Stringer (Coatesville, PA / Lancaster Mennonite). Zepp also dished out a game-high 11 assists. Junior
Kali Burres (Wanaque, NJ / Hawthorne Christian) led the offense with a game-high five kills, while freshman
Katie Strickland (Suffolk, VA / Portsmouth Christian) followed with a career-high three kills.
In the second match, Cairn had a decent battle on its hands as Five Towns (2-1) rallied to win the first set 25-23. The Highlanders claimed the second set (25-21), before dueling with the Sound in a back-and forth third set, before Cairn rallied and scored three points in a row to win the third set. The Highlanders used that momentum to handily win the fourth set (25-19). Burres led the Highlanders for the second-straight match with a match-high 10 kills to go along with 11 digs. Buress was followed closely by freshman
Caroline Conrad (Bangkok, Thailand / International Community School), who slammed down a career-high nine kills and earned nine digs. Zepp collected a match-high 26 assists and registered 16 digs. Queen led the Highlanders with a match-high 18 digs.
Cairn will be back on the court on Tuesday, September 14 when it welcomes New Jersey City University to Langhorne for a non-conference match at 7 p.m.
