FAIRLESS HILLS, PA - Despite a strong start in the first game, Cairn's offense could not keep pace with the conference-leading Giants and dropped both halves of Monday morning's doubleheader, 3-6 & 2-13.
GAME ONE: Cairn leapt out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first thanks to RBI singles from
Olivia Nieto and
Elizabeth Malarski. In the top of the second inning, starting pitcher
Krista Earl induced three straight groundouts to preserve the Highlander lead. However, the Giants were able to do damage in their halves of both the third and fourth innings, including a home run to straight away center and an RBI triple in the fourth to put the Giants up 6-2. Both teams failed to put any more runs on the board in the fifth and sixth innings. Cairn was able to mount the beginning of a comeback in the bottom of the 7th, courtesy of a
Kacey Wees single to score
Jenna Kenyon, and had the tying run at the plate with two outs, but ultimately could not overcome the deficit and dropped game one to Keystone 6-3.
In game one,
Jenna Kenyon continued her streak of good batting, going 2-3 with 2 runs scored. Catcher
Olivia Nieto went 2-4 with an RBI.
GAME TWO: Unlike the first game, the Highlanders were unable to establish momentum early, as Keystone racked up 5 runs in the first inning and 6 in the third. Cairn was able to get two runs back in the third, thanks to an
Olivia Nieto RBI single, followed by a hit-by-pitch and a Keystone error to allow another run to score for Cairn. The Highlander's pitching tandem of
Kacey Wees and
Krista Earl were able to hold Keystone to just two more runs in the game, but Cairn was unable to make any headway on offense and the game ended, Keystone 13, Cairn 2.Â
At the plate, the Highlanders were led by
Jenna Kenyon (2-3) and
Elizabeth Malarski (2-2);
Olivia Nieto had the Highlander's only RBI of the game.
With the losses, the Highlanders drop to 7-11 overall, but remain at .500 conference play at 5-5. Cairn also holds last playoff spot in the conference as the ladies are currently sitting in the fifth spot. The Highlanders will look to improve their playoff picture when they face the team currently sitting in 4th place, the Centenary University Cyclones, on Thursday.
