Despite a good showing in the first quarter, the Highlanders and their depleted bench could not keep up with the Chargers in the subsequent 30 minutes and lost to Lancaster Bible College for the second time this season, 78-42.
Due to injuries and COVID-related protocols, Cairn found themselves entering the game with six eligible players. Despite these odds, the Highlanders put up a valiant fight and came out firing in the first quarter. Five minutes into the game, Cairn held a 15-5 lead thanks in part to lights-out three-point shooting by
Allison Barnes,
Markie Watson, and
Amanda Barry. However, at this point Lancaster could start to turn to their bench for fresh legs, and Cairn's six-man rotation simply could not hang tough with the Chargers for 40 complete minutes, evidenced by the 31-0 bench point differential. By the final whistle, Cairn had succumbed to the Chargers' high-powered offense and lost their second game in a row to Lancaster Bible.
LBC's Jenna Dombach led all players with 22 points on 62% shooting, including going an impressive 6-8 from beyond the arc. Cairn's
Allison Barnes was called upon to run the offense and guard down low, and did both well despite playing for a staggering 39 minutes. Her 11 points and 11 rebounds were good for her first double-double of the season, and she also chipped in three blocks.
Markie Watson was second on the team with 9 points, and
Amanda Barry hit 2 threes in the loss.
The Highlanders next take the court here in the Mason Activity Center on Thursday, 3/4, for the first game of their make-up series with Clarks Summit rescheduled from last weekend. Tip-off time is at 5 PM, but be sure to tune into Cairn Highlanders TV early, as there will be a short pregame ceremony to honor the careers of seniors
Melissa Good and
Jenna Krage.
