POTTERSVILLE, N.Y. – The Cairn University women's basketball team won, 64-33, over non-conference foe Word of Life Bible Institute in game-two of their weekend doubleheader with the Huskies on Saturday.
With the win, the Highlanders improved to 2-0 on the young season, their first 2-0 start to a season since the 2007-08 campaign 14 years ago.
Cairn (2-0) picked up right where they left off on Friday, working its half-court offense and getting to the free throw line. The Highlanders drew six Word of Life (1-2) fouls in the first quarter, connecting on 10 of 12 attempt and led 22-10 after one. Cairn kept the Huskies at bay in the second quarter and took a 34-19 lead into intermission. Cairn put the game out of reach with a 7-0 run to start the third quarter, taking a 41-19 lead in the process and cruised to victory in the fourth frame.
The Highlanders outshout Word of Life 30.4% (21-69) to 23% (14-61). Cairn went to the charity stripe 29 times in the contest, converting on 20 of those attempts (69%). The Highlanders forced 29 Word of Life turnovers in the contest and scored 20 points off those turnovers. The Highlanders got ample help from their bench in the bout, accumulating 29 bench points compared to 18 for the Huskies.
Cairn was led offensively by freshman
Taylor Hinson (Carney's Point, NJ / Collingswood HS), who posted the first double-double of her career with a 19 points and 13 rebounds (both game-highs). Hinson also shot 73% from the charity stripe (8-11) and grabbed a game-high nine offensive rebounds. Hinson was followed by classmate
Caroline Conrad (Bangkok, Thailand / International Community School) who notched 14 points off the bench to go along with four boards and two blocks. Senior
Dakota Hitchner (Ocean City, NJ / Atlantic Christian) added 10 points and four rebounds, while freshmen
Tamia Warner (Ewing, NJ / Ewing) and
Kailee Sobrino (Vail, AZ / Empire HS) each contributed seven points. Warner also snagged a career-high 10 rebounds, while senior
Markie Watson (Jupiter, FL / Holy Cross Academy) dished out a game-high five assists.
Cairn will be back on the court on Tuesday, November 16 when it travels to Centenary University (NJ) for a non-conference bout at 7 p.m.
