Late Game Drama Leads Highlanders to Split with LBC

LANCASTER, PA- The Highlanders hit the road Wednesday afternoon, traveling to take on Lancaster Bible College in a doubleheader. The Highlanders played two close contests, taking the first 7-5, and narrowly dropping the second 4-2.

Cairn trailed from the start in game one as LBC notched the afternoon's first run. Tori Knox knocked a 2 run single in the 3rd to put Cairn back ahead 2-1 for a brief period of time. The Chargers picked up 4 runs over the next two innings to take a 5-2 lead. The Highlanders hard-hitting freshman Olivia Nieto got one back for Cairn in the 5th with an RBI single, bringing the deficit to 2 runs. The next couple innings passed without much drama until the top of the 7th. Reaven East started the rally with a single, Haley knocked her fourth hit of the day to score East, Meagan Maratita singled, and Knox singled to tie the game. With runners on 1st and 3rd, Nieto mashed another single, scoring Maratita and giving the Highlanders the lead. Krista Earl helped her own cause with an RBI groundout, giving a two run cushion, 7-5. Earl closed the game out with ease, earning her 3rd win in the process.

Riding the momentum of a late rally and win, the Highlanders jumped out to a 2-0 lead in game two. Haley Tinney skipped home after an error by the catcher, and Nieto knocked in Maratita a couple batters later. The Chargers tied it up in the bottom half of the first frame, and after an action-packed first inning, both teams' bats went quiet over the next couple. The Chargers struck a big blow in the bottom of the sixth when power-hitting first basemen Morgan Burkholder deposited a pitch over the left field fence to give LBC a 4-2 lead. Unfortunately, the Highlanders couldn't summon anymore late game magic and they fell by a final score of 4-2.

The Highlanders will play a doubleheader at Keystone College Saturday afternoon at 12:00 PM.
